1st stop – Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa: The catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa were one of the World’s Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

This location presents a collection of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funeral cult, showcasing early Imperial Roman and Hellenistic influences. Some statues are Egyptian in style, yet with Roman hair styles and clothes. A circular staircase leads down to the tombs tunneled into the bedrock during the Antonine emperor era (second century AD). These were then used as burial chambers from the 2nd to the 4th centuries, before being rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft. To date, three sarcophagi have been discovered.
